Background:
Electrical power generation and distribution systems on board commercial and military aircraft are being required to meet new standards for harmonic distortion and power factor correction. For size and weight savings, 3 phase power supply configurations are often required at power levels of 500 watts and above. Typically these systems generate harmonic currents that are reflected back into the power distribution source distorting the AC line and causing conductive interference in attached equipment.
The low power factor associated with these systems causes inefficiency, excess heating, and an increase in the size of many power components required to support the differential between real and apparent power. The methods currently employed to address these problems are typically expensive, inefficient, and require active circuitry having a significantly higher parts count with reduced reliability in comparison to a passive component solution.
Overview:
Payne Magnetics Inc. has developed a 12-phase tranformer that can be configured in a simple passive rectifier curcuit to produce a variable frequency (350 to 1200 hz) power supply capable of less than 3% total harmonic distortion, a power factor greater than 99%, and efficiency of up to 95%. The transformer is available in three sizes (70, 650, and 1000 VA) and four standard voltage outputs (28, 52 ,200, and 270 Vrms).
