SMPS Magnetics
Power Supply Units (PSUs) were originally developed in a linear format. With rapid growth and numerous breakthroughs in technology, most of them have been transformed into SMPS formats. A “Switch Mode Power Supply” is an electronic power supply that incorporates a switching regulator in order to be highly efficient in the conversion of electrical power.
Switch mode power supplies demand much more from their magnetic components then those placed on them by linear power supplies. When manufacturing transformers and inductors for SMPS’s, control and consistency of coupling parasitic values is critical. Parameters such as leakage inductance, inter-winding and distributed capacitance, to name a few, must be held consistent from part to part to insure proper performance of the overall power supply.
To insure this consistency, Payne Magnetics utilizes extensive operator training techniques and modern automated winding machines to reduce variability.
When it comes to complex custom components, which typically have a high labor content, detailed CAD documentation which relies heavily on digital images, is alo used to eliminate the possibility of any variation.
